I've had a lot of technical posts lately, and was hoping to get a more business oriented article out before another technical post. Nonetheless, this issue keeps coming up, so I thought I would remind the community.
Microsoft offers a fantastic way to check to see if a server or workstation is up to date with the latest released patches -- Windows (now Microsoft) Update. Microsoft Update can inspect your server's configuration, download and install patches for Windows Server, IIS, and SQL Server. Its an essential tool to keep your system software updated.
But it doesn't update SharePoint -- not WSS, not MOSS. Server engineers with less exposure to SharePoint often assume they've brought their systems current by installing the RTM version of SharePoint followed by Windows Update.
Remember -- only a SharePoint 2007 Service Pack, Infrastructure Update, or hotfix download will update your Sharepoint 2007 system. Windows Update doesn't patch Sharepoint.
The process is completely different, too:
- install the binaries on all your front end and application servers
- run the Sharepoint installation and configuration wizard to deploy the updated code throughout your server farm (even if you only have a single server installation).
Hope this helps.
