There’s been a lot of speculation lately about release dates for some of the supporting software around the SharePoint 2010 ecosystem – especially the next version of SQL Server – SQL 2008 R2 and Office 2010. (Much of this information is sourced from ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley.) Here’s what we know.
· SQL 2008 R2 will include PowerPivot (formerly Project Gemini). Power Pivot is a business intelligence tool that allows users to access millions of rows of SQL data from either Excel or SharePoint. May 2010 seems to be the consensus delivery date.
· Office 2010, now in public beta, is the productivity client of choice for the SharePoint 2010 server family. In November 2009, Microsoft published a June 2010 target date for this release.
· TechEd 2010 North America, Microsoft’s principal technical user conference, will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 7-10, 2010. The keynote speech is at 9am on Monday, June 7.
Add that all up, and I anticipate the official release being announced at the first day of TechEd, with wild celebrations breaking out up and down Bourbon Street. (That happens often, I’m told.) Right or wrong, it should be a fun week in New Orleans.
The date is official - May 12, 2010 - http://blogs.kma-llc.net/microknowledge/2010/03/sharepoint-2010-official-release-date-may-12-2010.html
